Hazlewood received clearance to link up with the Australian team for the first Ashes Test post-injury worries, but fellow pace bowler the paceman will miss the match

The two experienced hamstring injuries during their match for NSW versus Victoria during Sheffield Shield action this past Wednesday

Scans showed Hazlewood, 34 avoided tissue injury. The 33-year-old Abbott, yet to debut, suffered a "moderate grade" injury

Team captain Cummins will miss the initial match, commencing later this month, meaning the absence of another experienced fast bowler such as Hazlewood could have proven a major blow

Abbott would have been doubtful to feature at the Perth match, while Hazlewood will combine Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland as the primary pace attack

Cummins, who is recovering from back issues, appears to be scheduled to reappear for the second Test beginning December 4 in Brisbane

Top-order player Smith will lead Australia in Cummins' absence

Like many of the Australia players, Hazlewood participated in recent matches of Sheffield Shield matches ahead of the Ashes

Until this match, he had not played a first-class match with his state team in more than a year

He felt tightness in his hamstring towards the end of the match recently and was substituted for safety reasons

Neither Hazlewood nor Abbott participated in batting for the follow-on innings during their defeat by 300 runs

"We're a week away before the international cricket - always err on being cautious," said Cummins

"They needed to determine what was happening ahead of risking that could worsen the injury more severe"

"He seldom shows him chipper, so it was good to witness his smile"

"He understands his physique really well. It seemed he felt somewhat concerned (and) wanted to get it checked out"

The bowler collected 57 appearances representing Australia in ODI and T20 cricket

Without Test experience the pace bowler provides bowling backup within the team, offering support to the main pace trio
