Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Team While McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the fall Tests, but lock McCarthy misses out.
Doris, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".
After playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches this season and featured in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol previously.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.
Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province lock Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is set to cover for Doris if the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on Monday before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
